Craigslist.org has a whole section for free stuff. All you have to do is find your city and then search from there. Like another answerer said, sometimes people just want to get rid of their stuff.

On a side note, I know you said you’re a low-income family, but renter’s insurance is actually pretty cheap–like $60 a year. May be worth the investment in case something happens again :)

    Best of luck to you!

Did you try Goodwill or even looking in the newspaper ads and such? When I moved into my apartment a year and a half ago, I got a practically brand new washer & dryer set for $150. I see people even advertising stuff for free just so they can get rid of it.

Try Goodwill, St. Vincent’s, or Salvation Army. They may have a program that can assist you or at least get you some stuff to hold you over until you can afford to buy again. Please remember to donate to them in the future, esp. if one of them is able to help you now.
