How do i keep my new kitten from scratching my furniture?

I would rsther than not get my cat de clawed since i have listened so most about it, though i do not wish to hurt my furniture. Of march a kitten is some-more critical than a furniture! we have purchased all for a small man together with a blemish desk pad though i was wondering if any one had any tips to keep from scratching a tanned hide furniture.

I would say until you can be sure kitty isn’t going to be scratching your furniture, keep her locked up away from the living room.

Some of the things to try are:

Get a scratching post for the kitten and put it near the furniture. When the kitten moves to scratch the furniture, pick him up and take him to the scratching post and put his paws up on it to encourage scratching it. When the kitten starts to go to the scratch post, give it treats.

Another thing that has worked well with our males (who seem harder to convince) is a super soaker. Not the most powerful one (that was my hubby’s idea and I vetoed it hehe), and any time the kitten "lifts a claw" to scratch the furniture – blast him. We also make a "psst" sound really loudly. After a while they understand that the pssst is going to be followed by water and that will work.

Some have said that double sided tape or tinfoil have worked for them. I haven’t tried them, but a friend of mine did with his kitten and she just kept moving along the furniture til she found a free spot. Of course each cat is different so it still might work for you.

Something similar to try is to take a roll of heavy paper towel (maybe the shop kind – they are sturdier) and wrap it around the base of the couch and spray it with a cat deterrent. The towel will protect the couch from any damage from the deterent and the smell should keep kitty from the couch (or chair or…)

As another answer said, there are claw covers that you can get.

Just as a note about your declawing your cat. I am glad you understand how traumatic it is. There was a board member of our local SPCA that got new leather furniture. Her cat had never clawed furniture before so we figured it must have been the smell of it that attracted her. Nancy declawed her cat to protect the furniture. At first it seemed all was good. But, after several months, the pads of the cats’ feet got very tough and she noticed that there was a trail of scuffed leather where her cat walked. It hadn’t helped at all in the end :( – just changed the damage to the couch.

    Good luck!!

Lucky you…you can start trimming your kitty’s claws when he’s still a baby, so he’ll get used to it! Just trim off the sharp points. If he gets squirmy, let him go: don’t make a scene of it. If you can trim a couple of claws at a time, you’ll be in good shape.

    Scatch posts
Get her used to having her nails trimmed – just take the sharp tips off and remember that there is a "quick" to the claw – if you nick this it will hurt her and probably bleed. Also you can buy claw covers

Lemon scented furniture polish might help too.
Very glad to hear that you are not planning on declawing her – it’s considered cruelty in the UK

I have 14 cats and leather furniture !

Well my cat ruined about two chairs in my house when she was a snip of a girl. We just told her no everytime she went over to do it. The scratch pad and carpeted posts I purchased she rarely touched.

She sort of outgrew it eventually. Now she just works the carpet periodically.

Without hitting the critter just say no very firmly. Eventually, the kitty will get the message.

Hi Justin… Thank you for not declawing!

A scratch pad is a good place to start. But a tall post is better and a cat tree is the best.

I live with 14 clawed cats and all my furniture is completely fine because they have huge cat trees to claw! You can purchase inexpensive floor to ceiling trees at walmart for $35.00 and your cat will love it!

I also clip thier nails. Just the tips to keep them dull so if they do extend thier claws it doesn’t do any damage.

You can also use softpaws claw covers. They don’t harm the cat and they come in fun colors! ;-)

I know it may sound cruel, but I used a squirt bottle of water and pretty soon, she stopped and decided to go to the scratching post I have.
