How easy is it to find furniture on the street in Budapest?

In my city here in Texas, because it is nearby a university, there is perfectly good furniture just lying around on the streets for the taking. Is this also true for the university areas of Budapest? If not, do they have an equivalent to a CCA or some super-cheap resale stores? What is it?

    Hi,
Believe it or not, furniture is a bit expensive in Hungary. Most people hang on to their old stuff forever and ever.
I inherited my mother-in-laws 1970 communist era junk furniture and I am dying to throw it out when I can afford some nice new stuff.
i was looking in stores in Budapest and things aren’t cheap at all.
There is a couple of Ikea stores in the city.
The cheap furniture stores have some very ugly things, not worth the money at all.Ikea things are nice enough but many "cheap’ furniture stores have pure ugly sofa beds and just basic things, not much style or comfort.(I would love to get a Lazy boy chair over there)
We were even joking about buying yard sale furniture from the US and resaleing in Hungary.
Once a year the whole city has a major "throw out" day. People put all of the unwanted household items out on the street and poor people and Gypsies go through it before the city comes around with trucks and takes it all to the dump yard.
If you go to a good neighborhood early in the morning, you may find some decent things.
I have been to a few second hand stores in the city but I really don’t remember seeing furniture.
Furniture is called’ butor" in Hungarian and sometimes there are flyers put into the mail boxes which advertise quick short sales at small wharehouses for a few days of specials on rugs, towels, drapes and some furniture. You can find some basic things there. There is also a store called JSK, which has a few pieces of furniture that aren’t overly expensive.
Personally, I think Ikea is the best.
Edit: You could check gragislist in Budapest for used stuff or buy a recycler newspaper in Hungary, the problem with that is it is all in Hungarian, maybe you have someone that can help you call or whatever
if you don’t speak Hungarian well enough.
My husband said there are some used furniture stores in the city but i think most of it is overpriced and old junky stuff.
Really most people hang on to their things way too long over there, not a throw away society like us here in the states.
i think it may be best if you find a apt. that already has some furniture in it, you can always add a few things to make it your home.It is a pain to get furniture delivered to your apt.everyone wants tips and you usually have to pay for delivery even from a new furniture store. It is hard for them to deliver up the staircases of the old buildings etc.
    Good luck.
