Red is amazing against hardwood floors — or a pale blue works nicely, too. With either color, you can use dark brown accents.

I’ve always wanted a RED couch-that would look awesome on hard wood floors!

Red is the first color that popped into my head, too. If I were you and on a budget, I’d glance through numerous magazines at the bookstore that feature interior designs. Find one that appeals to you and try to duplicate it. It’ll be challenging but fun!

working with hardwood floors is like working with a blank slate. meaning……….any and everything goes with them. they are the best floors to work with as far as decorating. so take your style and get started with the furniture you love and throw a few rugs down for contrast colors and you have it. you cant go wrong.

I think green or red would look good with hardwood floors. I’m partial to green.

anything looks good with hardwood floors, i just love hardwood floors and u are lucky that your apartment has some. i like lighter colors only because they just really pop out the room but a lot of people are afraid of getting them dirty and etc. anyway i have my furniture made out of microfiber which is very contemporary and really easy to clean u can spill crap on it and the stains seem to just come off. mine are a nice reddish color its hard to explain but its a nice and comfortable red color its not engine red and its not dark somewhere in between with some butter/beige and blue accent colors for rugs paintings pillows and etc.

depends on the colour of your wood…. modern usually is lighter in colour than antique

I would say anything in browns or neutrals. There are alot of nice living room sets that are contemporary and affordable as well in those colors. I have the dark tuscan oak floor and our living room set is brown and it looks very nice. You can always add bright colors with accessories, throw pillows etc.

Check out the link I’m going to give you. It has tons of pictures of some of the youngest, hippest furniture I have ever seen, much of it displayed on hardwood floors. You should be able to glean lots of ideas from the photos concerning color, and basically – just pick what you like best and go from there. As another person said: hardwood floors are like an empty canvas for you to add color any way you prefer.

I think you should go with a contrast in order to achieve modern look, so if the floors are lighter, get dark furniture and if the floors are darker get lighter furniture.
examples;
espresso floors with cream couch
or birch floors with chocolate couch
both would look good with bold throw pillows or accents.

What kind of hardwood?….;-)
Really….with your standard Oak floor anything goes.
If you like contemporary looks, try a dark contrast with ebony stained furnishings. I suggest natural tones for the walls and to combine different wallcolors. Look at the following color palette
http://www.myaurapaint.com/?gclid=CPTPz-erxYsCFQtpGAod5EczHA
and emagine a combination of your hardwoodfloors, dark furniture (neutral, beige cusions?) and three different wallcolors, like "caliente", "italianate" and "jojoba"…..
If you are not allowed to paint, try to bring those colors in with pillows, throws and/or Art…..
Most of all, have fun with it..;-)
good luck….

If you have dark flooring then the furniture should be light colors, so it stands out, basically you need to understand which part of the room or which piece of furniture you want to be the main symbol/element of the room and then just concentrate on that.
