We’re getting a black wrought iron canopy bed for our bedroom. We’d like to also get some matching furniture (or paint existing furniture to save money) and were wondering what color would be good for our dressers, nightstands, etc? My husband doesn’t want black because it’s too dark, so maybe something a little lighter? Not like a natural wood finish since it would take up a lot of time to sand and stain all of that.

You can consider getting mirrored night stands or a dresser, or you can paint your furniture a warmer white or a gray, or warm beige and put mirrors on the top to get the feel of some for some of the current trends. You can also paint the furniture and put pieces of granite or marble on the tops of your cabinets to give them a warm, complimentary and newer feel. There are some really cool patina like paint finishes (Tommy Hilfiger, I think) that could also be used on furniture. (Just have one piece in that finish and then simplify the rest.) You can check out some of Martha Stewarts furniture for inspiration if you are going to paint. It really depends on the look and feel you are going for.

What color is your canopy? Consider purchasing a colored canopy and you can match that up with furniture colors in your room.
If not, you can always decorate your bed with colored pillows and a comforter and use that as a color guide for your nightstand.
Black matches with almost anything as an accent color, so I wouldn’t be too worried about it.
